The Power of Connecting

communication

A Two-Way Process

To communicate means to exchange information. This involves both speaking and listening. It's a two-way process.

Connecting is also a two-way process. It involves speaking and listening, giving and taking. But the exchange is at a far deeper level.

The Power of Connecting

Of all the forces at play in our world, connecting to others is probably the most powerful. Think about it.

When two people connect, they feel less alone. They can even feel as if they have become larger or more whole because of the interaction. Momentum is created and things are more likely to get done. Plus, connecting simply feels good.

But why does connecting feel good? —The answer is simple: when people connect, they identify and relate with one another. Connecting is affirming to everyone involved.

When people connect, they share more than information; they share themselves.

Leadership

Connecting is crucial for leaders. Groups form and teams come into being as a direct result of the ability of a leader to connect with others.

How to Connect

Connecting with others is a skill that we work on throughout of lives. From our first friends in pre-school to our marriages and business partnerships as adults, all of our relationships depend on connecting.

When it comes to connecting, a few simple behaviours carry a lot of power. Remember to smile and make eye contact. Let people know that you have really taken in what they said. Paraphrase their ideas. Even better, ask questions to further their train of thought or explore their feelings.

Connecting with others depends on sincere caring and presence. So much can be accomplished by simply affirming the goodness you see in others. Let them feel your readiness to see their admirable qualities and your compassion for their weaknesses.

Why It Matters

As motivational speaker and trainer, Susan C. Young, says, "Connecting with others gives us a sense of inclusion, connection, interaction, safety, and community. Your vibe attracts your tribe, so if you want to attract positive and healthy relationships, be one! Staying connected and getting reconnected feeds the flow of goodness, which empowers our humanity."

A Story About the Power of Connecting

Karen was excited when she was asked to join a committee focused on an issue she cares about deeply. Sometimes when people work together on issues they are passionate about, they run into conflict with each other.

Although she'd heard that the committee was experiencing conflict, Karen was determined to do her part and help them work together more effectively. She started by connecting individually with each member of the committee, taking the time to learn not only their take on the issue, but also their personal interests.

As happens when a person takes the time to form solid connections, she discovered areas of shared interest. At the start of each committee meeting, she made a point of revealing these shared interests.

The connections she'd made grew into connections between the others. Over time, the atmosphere in the meetings changed for the better. People interacted more. Difficult conversations began with an attitude of acceptance and cooperation.

Karen felt a deep sense of pride, not only for her contribution to this important cause, but also in her ability to help others connect in a meaningful way.
